Resources in San Luiz, AZ

These are the resources I've either had direct experience in using or know of.

Mexican Consulate

There is a consulate for Mexico in Yuma, Arizona. This is important information to know should you ever encounter issues with the police.

MEDICAL

Medical is obviously an important factor to continuing to live your life. That being said, it's trivial and very cheap to obtain medication here. Certainly cheaper than having to deal with US-based medication, that's for sure.

Regardless, for those that prefer US-based medical coverage, these are your options, depending on where you choose to go to.

US side

The closest American facility would be the San Luis Walk-In Clinic. They even have coverage for autism, a rare sight indeed.

Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma, Arizona. This is the largest hospital within range of the city of San Luis, Arizona.

Phoenix Memorial Hospital is the other hospital that's relatively close in Arizona.

Resources in San Luis Río Colorado

American Consulate

The U.S. Consulate is in Nogales. Know this. Remember this. Love this. You will need it, if you are in a situation that requires assistance. There are a few other American consulates scattered around Mexico, but the one relevant to San Luis Río Colorado is here in Nogales.

The most important thing to stress here is that you do not need to learn Spanish to communicate. English-speaking pharmacies and walk-in clinics are readily available. Medication is easy to obtain and pretty cheap, unlike the US.

Hospital Santa Margarita is the major hospital here in San Luis Río Colorado. English and Spanish are typically spoken here. I've linked to a Google Translate-based copy of the website to make it easy to review services available.

FOOD

Convenience shops pretty much everywhere. Bodega Aurrera that's near the border with a green paint is one of the closer major stores. There is another one that I have not personally visited, at Calz Monterrey 1, Aeropuerto, 83479 San Luis Río Colorado, Son.

It's basically Walmart. You'll recognize the Walmart logo at the payment terminals. It is also the only one that I know of with free wifi if you need such access. Otherwise, you'll see lots of Fruteria Welton stores and smaller neighborhood stores that don't necessarily always make it known that it's a store.

You'll need someone local to show you these sort of stores if you're interested in ever checking them out. Otherwise, Oxxo, Circle K are the major brands for fuel, convenience, but there is also BP (and apparently VIP Markets?), and many other such stores.

Walmart is available right across the border on the US side.

Costco is available in Mexicali, a couple hours away from San Luis Río Colorado. Plan to spend a day if you choose to visit Costco.

UTILITIES

CFE is the only nationalized entity that deals with electricity. Otherwise you can use solar if you have such a setup. And of course, OOMAPAS for water. Note that sewage is typically not included by default if water service is available to a given property. This is worth checking into if you purchase property.

Typically around $20 for for water services. About $75 for electricity. Yes, in USD. No, I'm not joking. Appliances that consume more power may change the calculus of the utility bills.

Internet is handled by Infinitium and Megacable. Both use FTTH (Fiber to the Home). I pay $55/monthly for 1G/1G from Megacable. And I pay $95 for 1G/1G from Infinitum, as well.

Phone service is also available here at my home. Check with your preferred phone company for specifics but T-Mobile does support the city and does allow roaming to a degree. A T-Mobile cell spot will be available for use. Not sure if it'll work while on a Mexico network, but we can give it a shot.

Major providers are Movistar, AT&T Mexico, Telcel.

Specifics can be found with Best Cell Plans in Mexico, mainly an expat website and typically kept up-to-date. I personally don't care about phone service because well... there's really no point for me to have phone service here other than having a cell connection, but a home phone will be available.

You can also use propane or gas if you like for grilling or cooking.
